Local 49: Operating Engineers

The Union

Local 49 is the union of engineers who operate heavy machinery as part of large construction projects. The union currently represents more than 13,000 men and women across Minnesota as well as North and South Dakota, and they hold contracts for highway/heavy and building contractors, well drillers, equipment repair shops, sand and gravel suppliers, and many more organizations. Local 49 has eleven offices across the three states.

The Event

Students will get to learn about the career of an operating engineer, including getting the opportunity to have hands-on experience inside three heavy equipment simulators. The simulators provide the look of the operators’ equipment as well as the feel as you experience the physical feedback of the machine during the simulation. During the event students will also learn more about the day-to-day responsibilities on the job, what specific careers within Local 49 look like, and have a chance to ask questions of workers.

* Please note: Students interested in attending should inform their Trades Ambassadors and/or their counselors. Parents are to complete the social media/photo release form.
