Job Description

The Brick/Block Layer lays brick, precast concrete, stone, block and other materials to construct or repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures. Brick/Block Layers provide assistance to the foreman in maintaining correct heights and specifications according to plans, completing all tasks in a safe and productive manner.

Day to Day Responsibilities

Lays Materials

  • Demonstrates knowledge of industry standards.
  • Assists foreman in lay out. Is confident reading blueprints, plans, or drawings.
  • Is able to layout materials efficiently using hand tools, chalk lines, string lines, tapes, squares, and levels without direction.
  • Properly installs door frames, window frames and embedded plates.
  • Builds leads and corners as directed.
  • Adjusts layout for window and door openings.
  • Checks for correct vertical and horizontal alignment.
  • Fastens materials to structure using anchors, ties, or cement.
  • Core fill block according to job specifications.
  • Removes excess mortar from walls and floors. Finishes mortar joints to ensure a sealed and uniform appearance.
  • Assists in demolition in order to repair existing structures according to plans.

Works efficiently at elevated heights

  • Communicates to operators dropping and picking up loads via hand signals when the laborers are not available.
  • Follows all OSHA elevated height regulations.

Works with Masonry Laborers

  • Communicates with laborers throughout the day ensuring material is stocked appropriately to increase efficiencies.
  • Instructs laborers as to cuts needed.
  • Assists laborers in cutting materials, supplying materials, mixing mortar, and operating as needed.

Prepares the job site

  • Assists in setup, tear down, and moving of scaffolding.
  • Informs foreman on stock levels and materials needed for the next day.
  • Keeps all KJC equipment secure to minimize loss due to theft.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe jobsite.

Comply with all KJC Safety Policies at all times

  • Acknowledge the importance of safety and PPE on the job site.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or concerns to the foreman, human resources, or the President.

Minimum Years of Experience

A valid driver’s license. The ability to lift 75-100lbs. Knowledge of industry standard and masonry techniques. Ability to work at elevated heights, in small narrow areas, and confined spaces for long periods of time. Physical ability to stand and perform repetitive work that includes bending, kneeling, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling and squatting for 8 or more hours a day. Effective communication skills including; speaking, listening, and following oral & written instructions. The ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure in a calm manner. Previous experience in masonry construction.
