LeJeune Wallin Scholars are lower-income students who benefit from tuition assistance as well as a Wallin advisor so they may complete an Associate's degree and become a full-time LeJeune Steel employee. While completing their degree, students may work part-time for LeJeune during their two school years and full-time during a summer internship, and they also receive a company mentor.

Students may attend one of the technical schools below and pursue an Associates degree in a welding program in order to qualify for the LeJeune Steel position:

  • Saint Paul College

Job Description

As a Trades Hub Wallin Scholar, receive a technical degree in order to become a full-time Fitter/Welder I at LeJeune Steel.

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Attend technical school beginning in the fall of 2022 to pursue a two-year Associates degree in a welding program.
  • Work part-time at LeJeune Steel during your school years to earn money as well as benefit from on-the-job training and an ongoing orientation to the company.
  • Work full-time at the company during the summer between your two school years at the company.
  • Benefit from regular meetings with a dedicated Wallin advisor to help with your degree-completion process as well as meetings with your LeJeune Steel mentor to assist with your orientation to the company and performance on the job.
  • Receive a full-time offer to work at LeJeune Steel following successful completion of your degree program.

As a full-time Fitter/Welder I, you will:

  • Lay out, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler.
  • Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
  • Observe tests on welded surfaces, such as ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using measuring instruments. Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Heat, form, and dress metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment. Ignite torch and adjust valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.

Minimum Years of Experience

High school education or equivalent (or in-progress). Entry level. Pursuing or applying to 2-year technical degree. High motivation level and ability to multi-task and work well with others. Strong attention to detail, organization and time management skills.
