Job Description

As a Machinist, you will set up and operate conventional and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.

Day to Day Responsibilities

• Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to measure dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces
• Follow instructions of setup sheet
• Set machines to the necessary requirements
• Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mill, lathe, grinders, and shapers in accordance with setup requirements
• Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
• Set up and operate machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
• Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machine controls or control media as required
• Verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications
• Record quality data on process output and control process to maintain process control within requirements
• Verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies
• Run more than one machine when possible
• Dispose of chips and maintain coolant cleanliness for longer coolant life
• Perform regular maintenance and cleaning of machines and work areas as detailed on area 5S worksheet and record completion of tasks as appropriate
• Offer feedback and suggestions for process improvements to engineers and programmers
• Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Years of Experience

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or 3-5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possess knowledge of using CAD software to design and program Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to machine metallic and nonmetallic parts. Ability to effectively use measurement devices. Ability to read and understand blueprints. Demonstrate teamwork, attention to detail, problem solving, planning, and organization skills.
